I am completely enamored with these cute little codes, sometimes I think it's half the reason I was so keen to make a fanlisting.

About Portland

Portland is one amazing place to live. I've always been enamored with the history of the 'Oregon Trail' and wanted to visit. Lucky me that I had the opportunity to live here. The city itself straddles the Willamette River. Willamette is pronounced, WILL-a-met - the 'a' as in apple - this is important for if you pronounce it willametty...people will fall to their knees in laughter and you will feel silly.

The first plot of land was purchased in 1843 by Lovejoy and Overton. The sparse woodland area was razed so quickly, stumps were left in their wake...hence the nickname Stump Town. Logging was the practiced trade in Portland, which by 1850 employed the most number of residents. By 1860 Portland had become an important freight depot as well, living up to his true name of Portland.

Portland has many nicknames it would seem. It's also known as Puddle Town, P Town, River City and Bridge Town. There are lots of bridges here, indeed. So, all of these names make perfect sense. In 1888, it was first dubbed the City of Roses and it's true. I've never seen more flowers in any one city. And it's wonderful.

It also rains a lot. And that, my friends, is wonderful too.

A few interesting facts:

Portland's name was decided upon a coin toss in 1845. It was almost called Boston.
Oregon City eclipsed Portland in it's early years.
Lewis and Clark Camped here in 1805 on their way to the Pacific Ocean.
Gus Van Sant, famous Indie Director is a native Portlander and often his films are based either on or are filmed here.
Other famous people from Portland include Matt Groening, Margeaux Hemingway, Jane Powell, Ahmed Rashad, Sally Struthers and Lindsey Wagner.
Bands to come out of Portland include Everlast and Quarterflash...that cool 80's band ;)
